Filing for office

If you would like to be placed on a ballot, you will need to complete an affidavit of candidacy and submit the required filing fee, or a petition in place of filing fee, with the appropriate filing officer during the designated period. See the table below for 2020 candidate filing dates.

Important information regarding filing by mail or in person for 2020 will be updated here prior to the open of the first filing period.

If you would like to be a candidate for office, you should verify you are qualified before filing for office. You must state under oath that you:

  • are eligible to vote.
  • will be at least 21 years of age upon taking office.
  • will have been a resident of the district for at least 30 days before the general election.
  • have no other affidavit on file for the same primary or ensuing general election.

For any additional candidate eligibility requirements regarding taking office, please contact Ramsey County Elections.

A packet of filing information, including information on campaign finance and voter information lists, will be provided to all individuals who file.
